He is an Art Historian with expertise in African and Caribbean artistic, visual and religious practices, whose work challenges traditional disciplinary boundaries and examines the varied understandings of – and engagement with – ‘art’ and ‘visual culture’.įollowing professorships at Havana’s High Institute of Art from 1993-1997, the Rhode Island School of Design from 2002-2004 and Stanford University from 2004-2013, Martinez-Ruiz joined the University of Cape Town, where he has served as the head of the Art History and Discourse of Art Department from 2013-2017. Martinez-Ruiz earned his B.A from the University of Havana in 1994 and his Ph.D. Tanner-Opperman Chair of African Art History in Honor of Roy Sieber, Indiana University Senior Research Associate, University of Oxford, School of Anthropology & Museum Ethnography Research Senior Fellow, Harvard University, Hutchins Center for African & African American Research Honorary Distinguished Professor, University of Cape Town, Michaelis School of Fine Art. ![]() Her most recent books include The Mantle of the Earth: Genealogies of a Geographical Metaphor (University of Chicago Press, 2021) and Where Light in Darkness Lies: The Story of the Lighthouse (Reaktion, 2022). ![]() Her research interests and publications span historical and cultural geography with a specific focus on landscape, sacred space and the geographical imagination. Professor Della Dora teaches Human Geography at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she also co-directs the Centre for the GeoHumanities. He has also translated The Yi River Commentary on the Book of Changes (2019), by the Song-dynasty Confucian Cheng Yi. His books include Sacred Place in Early Medieval Neoplatonism (2004), A Thirteenth-Century Textbook of Mystical Theology at the University of Paris (2004), On the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy: The Thirteenth-Century Textbook Edition (2011), and the forthcoming On the Divine Names: The Thirteenth-Century Textbook Edition.
